My iPhone Won't Charge. 7 Things to Try Before Booking a Repair in Perth

If your iPhone has suddenly stopped charging, don’t panic — and don’t rush out to buy a new phone just yet. Charging issues are one of the most common problems we see at Fixpress, and more often than not, the fix is simpler (and cheaper) than people expect.

Here’s what to check before booking a repair.

1. Check the Charging Cable First

Cables take the most physical abuse of any phone accessory. Bent pins, frayed wiring near the connector, or a loose fit are the #1 cause of “my phone won’t charge” calls. Try a different Apple-certified cable before assuming the worst.

2. Try a Different Power Source

Swap the wall adapter, try a different wall socket, or plug into a laptop USB port. If your phone charges from one source but not another, the problem isn’t your iPhone at all.

3. Look Inside the Charging Port

Pocket lint, sand, and dust build up in the Lightning or USB-C port over time and block the connection. Use a torch to check — but don’t poke around with metal objects, as this can damage the internal pins. If you see debris, a gentle puff of compressed air is the safest first step.

4. Restart Your iPhone

A simple restart can clear up software glitches that stop your phone from recognising it’s plugged in. It sounds too easy, but it solves more cases than you’d think.

5. Check for a Software Update

Apple occasionally ships bug fixes related to charging and battery management. Go to Settings > General > Software Update to rule this out.

6. Inspect for Water Damage

Has your phone been near water, humidity, or condensation recently? Moisture in the charging port is a common — and sneaky — culprit. If you suspect water damage, avoid charging it further and bring it in before corrosion sets in.

7. Watch the Battery Health Percentage

Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If you’re seeing significant degradation, your phone may still be “charging” — just very slowly, or not holding charge long. This usually points to a battery replacement rather than a port or cable issue.

When It’s Time to Bring It In

If you’ve worked through this list and your iPhone still won’t charge, the issue is likely one of:

  • A damaged charging port (often from lint buildup or a bent pin)
  • A faulty battery
  • A failed charging IC (logic board component)

These aren’t DIY fixes, but they’re also not usually a “buy a new phone” situation. At Fixpress, we diagnose charging issues for free and can usually repair the same day — whether it’s a port clean-out, battery replacement, or board-level repair.
