MacBook Won't Turn On? Here's What to Check Before You Panic

A black screen on your MacBook can feel like a disaster especially if you’ve got work, photos, or assignments on there you haven’t backed up. The good news: a MacBook that won’t turn on is very often fixable, and not always expensive. Here’s what to check first.

1. Confirm It’s Actually Power, Not Just the Screen

Plug your MacBook in, then listen and feel. Do the fans spin up? Do you hear the startup chime? Can you feel warmth after a few minutes? If yes, your Mac might be turning on but the screen isn’t displaying — a different (and often cheaper) repair than a dead logic board.

2. Check the Charger and Port

Try a different charging cable and adapter if you have access to one. Look closely at the MagSafe or USB-C port for bent pins, lint, or corrosion. A worn-out charger is one of the most common reasons a MacBook appears “dead.”

3. Try a Forced Restart

Hold the power button for 10 seconds, release, then press it again to turn the Mac back on. For older MacBooks with a battery indicator light, check if it lights up at all when plugged in.

4. Reset the SMC (System Management Controller)

On Intel MacBooks: shut down, then hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for 10 seconds. This resets the power management system and resolves a surprising number of “won’t turn on” cases. (Apple Silicon Macs handle this differently — a simple force restart is usually the equivalent.)

5. Check for Liquid Damage Signs

Spilled coffee, water, or even high humidity can short out a MacBook without obvious signs from the outside. If your Mac was near liquid recently and stopped working soon after, avoid charging it further — this can worsen corrosion damage.

6. Listen for Unusual Sounds

Clicking, grinding, or repeated chime loops on startup usually point to a hardware fault (often the logic board or hard drive) rather than something you can fix by restarting.

What Usually Causes a “Dead” MacBook

When customers bring in a MacBook that won’t turn on, it’s typically one of:

  • A faulty charger, port, or cable (cheap, fast fix)
  • A drained or failed battery
  • Liquid damage to the logic board
  • A failed display or backlight (Mac is “on” but screen stays black)

When to Bring It In

If you’ve tried the basics above and you’re still staring at a black screen, don’t keep attempting repeated restarts or charger swaps — especially if liquid damage is a possibility, as time matters for preventing corrosion.
